System Engineer (Linux)
About the Role
Our client, a cloud infrastructure provider, is looking for System (Linux) Engineers to join its marketplace team. The team maintains a portfolio of preconfigured software applications that run on virtual machines, including a growing number of AI-related tools. These applications require regular updates, and the team also builds new ones.
This is a hands-on Linux role. You will install, configure, and update third-party software, fix what breaks, and work out unfamiliar products from their documentation.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and update existing software as new software versions are released
- Build new preconfigured apps for various applications and services
- Write and maintain installation, configuration, and update scripts
- Troubleshoot failed installs and updates, and find root causes of compatibility and dependency issues
- Test installation and update workflows for reliability
- Work with the existing auto-update service and automation, and fix issues as they arise
- Report progress through the team lead
Requirements
- Linux system administration experience (services, processes, packages, dependencies, configuration files)
- Bash / shell scripting
- Strong debugging skills and the ability to learn unfamiliar open-source software from documentation
- Ability to work independently on vague, ad hoc tasks and come back with a solution within a couple of days
- Comfortable with an uneven workload: some days are urgent and need extra hours, others are light
- An overlap with Chicago Time Zone (at least until 1-2PM Chicago Time)
- English for daily communication with the team
Nice to Have
- Go (the auto-update service is written in Go; at least the ability to read and modify code)
- Python
- Docker and containerized applications
- Experience building or maintaining VM / cloud images (Packer, cloud-init, Ansible or similar)
- Experience with cloud virtual machines
